The BioEnergy Genome Center (BEGC;http://www.bioenergychina.org) is a division of Chinese Academy of Science Qingdao Institute of BioEnergy and Bioprocess Technology (CAS-QIBEBT;http://www.qibebt.cas.cn), a national institute established in 09/2006 dedicated for Bioenergy R&D. BEGC's mission is to understand, explore, screen for and improve microbes, algae and plants that are the key resources and foundation for a sustainable bioenergy industry under the unique natural and social environments of China.  The main approaches that BEGC employs include the collection, analysis, modeling, simulation, manipulation and experimental validation of genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes and metabolomes. The research models and targets of BEGC range from bacteria, fungi, algae to plants that are of interest to bioenergy applications.

We are recruiting at all levels, from CAS Hundred-Talent Award Program (百人计划) , professors, associate professor, assistant professors to postdoctoral researchers in the following areas. 

Microalgae Molecular Biologists

Responsibility

  • Adaptation and development of experimental approaches and technique for physiological screening and characterization of oil-producing single cell eukaryotic algae, cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic microbes
  • Applying and developing genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics techniques available in BEGC to study novel pathways underlying oil accumulation and environmental stress resistance in single cell eukaryotic algae, cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic microbes
  • Work very closely with computational biologists to collect, integrate and mind functional genomics data related to microalgae, cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic microbes
  • Any other job/work assigned. 

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in biochemistry, molecular biology and microbial genetics, with previous experience in algae screening, cultivation, characterization, and/or manipulation
  • A solid experimental understanding of molecular biology and biotechnology is required.
  •  Experience with common bioinformatics tool packages is also strongly preferred.
  • Strong interest and innovative ability to develop experimental tools for helping scientists solving biological problems.
  •  Interpersonal and communication skills to work on collaborative projects within and across teams in a highly productive matrix environment.

Molecular Geneticists and Microbiogists

Responsibility

  • Adaptation and development of experimental approaches and technique for physiological screening and characterization of Gram-positive, cellulolytic, thermophilic anaerobic bacteria such as Clostridia.
  • Applying and developing genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics techniques available in BEGC to study novel pathways in Clostridia.
  • Applying and developing genetics techniques for the transformation, targeted mutagenesis, and expression of foreign genes in Clostridia.  
  • Work very closely with computational biologists to collect, integrate and mind functional genomics data related to Clostridia and related species.
  • Any other job/work assigned. 

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in microbial genetics, biochemistry and/or molecular biology, with previous experience in microbial screening, cultivation, characterization, and/or manipulation. Experiences with thermophilic anaerobes are a plus.
  •  A solid experimental understanding of molecular biology and biotechnology is required.
  • Experience with common bioinformatics tool packages

Lead Bioinformatics Scientists

Responsibility

  • Administration of our local installation of databases and bioinformatics/data analysis software tools
  • Enhancing existing and rapid developing new software tools for querying, reporting, and visualizing large amounts of data
  • Development and implementation of relational database schemas
  • Managing the acquisition, storage and exchange of data from external collaborators, public sources, and CAS internal sources with clear understanding and compliance with various scientific, legal and security requirements
  • Work very closely with experimentalists to trouble-shoot genome data collection• Any other job/work assigned. 

Requirements

  • A PhD or MS degree in an IT or biology related field with some post-degree experience in large scale data management or bioinformatics. A M.S. degree will also be considered for exceptional candidates.
  • A solid understanding of molecular biology and biotechnology is required.
  • Strong interest and innovative ability to develop tools for helping scientists solving biological problems.
  • Expertise with relational database systems (Oracle, Microsoft Access and mySQL), capable of performing database administration, schema design, and database programming.
  • Very comfortable in working in both Linux/Unix and Windows environment, fluent in shell scripting, SQL, Perl, Java, or C/C# programming languages.
  • Experience with common bioinformatics tool packages or bioinformatics tool development is also strongly preferred.

Computational Biologists

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing sequence analysis tools and processes including de novo or reference sequence based sequence assembly, digital gene expression, comparative genomics, and other functional genomics applications. Experience with 454 and/or Solexa sequence data analysis is a plus.
  • Identify and develop software tools for efficient integrating and mining diverse types of biological data, such as those in functional genomics.
  • Interact closely with collaborators in CAS and those around the world.

Requirements

  • A PhD or M.S. in genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience in computational biology and genomic data analysis is required.
  • Strong interest and innovative ability to explore data and to make novel discoveries. 
  • Fluency in Perl, Java, or C/C#, relational databases, and UNIX operating system is required.
  • Expert use of biological sequence databases, as well as in depth knowledge of bioinformatic analysis on the genome scale is also required.
  • Preference with previous experience in Next-Generation Sequencing technologies and analysis.
  • Familiarity with common statistical packages (e.g., Matlab, SAS, S-plus, R or similar) is desirable.
  • Strong technical and leadership skills demonstrated by a proven track record of collaborative and innovative scientific accomplishments including a strong publication record.
  • Strong written and oral communication skill in both English and Chinese
  • Interpersonal skills to work on collaborative projects within and across teams in a highly productive matrix environment, and strong networking and relationship building skills
